Your packing checklist

From item to ready-to-ship parcel.

Check the contents first

Batteries, perfume, aerosols, and other restricted contents can change the allowed packaging or service. Check the USPS shipping restrictions before estimating or buying a label.

Choose suitable packaging

Use a sound box or an appropriate mailer. Protect corners and fragile surfaces, cushion the contents, and prevent movement. Close the parcel without bulging. USPS Priority Mail packaging requires Priority Mail postage.

Weigh and measure after packing

Include the box, cushioning, and tape in the weight. Measure the outside of the finished parcel. Follow the label provider’s rounding instructions; eBay advises rounding dimensions up to whole inches.

Check the actual label quote

Compare online-label quotes from eBay Labels, Pirate Ship, or Shippo using the destination and packed measurements. Match the service and handling time offered in your listing. A calculator estimate helps you plan; confirm the final quote before purchasing postage.

Match, dispatch, and record

Check the item, recipient, and label together. Cover or remove old shipping labels and barcodes on reused packaging. Dispatch within your handling time and check tracking. eBay labels upload tracking automatically; add it when using another provider.

If the parcel measures 13.2 × 8.4 × 5.1 inches, eBay’s whole-inch rounding guidance gives 14 × 9 × 6 inches. Use the packed weight with the chosen service’s weight rules. Guessing from the item alone can understate the cost.

Choose the right approach

Different items need different packing.

Clothing & soft goods

A suitable mailer can save space. Protect the item from moisture and avoid packing it so tightly that seams strain or the parcel bulges.

Fragile items

Protect vulnerable surfaces and separate pieces so they cannot collide. Allow enough room for cushioning, then measure the finished package.

Bulky items

Check size limits and dimensional pricing before buying inventory. A lightweight item in a large box can leave much less profit than expected.

Branded packaging

Collectors may care about the retail box itself. Protect that box inside suitable outer packaging and show any existing box damage in your listing.

Build a repeatable station

Keep the basics within reach.

A scale, tape measure, packing tape, cushioning, and a few useful box sizes make it easier to measure consistently. Record the actual label and packing costs after each sale so your next estimate starts with experience.
