Your research workflow
Five checks before you name a price.
Identify your exact item
Write down the brand, model, edition, size, condition, accessories, and defects. A sealed set, a used complete set, and loose pieces belong in different comparison groups.
Search completed sales
Use eBay Advanced Search and select Sold items. Open several results and check the details. Active asking prices tell you about competition; completed sales give you evidence of what buyers paid.
Look closer with Product Research
In eBay Product Research, narrow the category, condition, and date range. It can show actual accepted Best Offer prices and up to three years of sales history. Start recent and widen the period if matching sales are scarce.
Compare the buyer’s total
Add the item price and buyer-paid shipping, before tax. Keep bundles, missing-part listings, and different versions separate. Try collecting 5–10 close matches instead of choosing one unusually high sale.
Choose a working range
Use the middle of your closely matched results as a starting point, then account for your item’s differences. Test a lower selling price too. If the profit only works at the highest observed sale, the purchase leaves little room for negotiation.
Worked example · illustrative figures
Three sales. One fair comparison.
Imagine three complete copies of the same used board game. Comparing the total paid before tax gives a clearer picture than comparing item prices alone.
| Comparable | Item price | Buyer shipping | Total before tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sale A | $38 | $7 | $45 |
| Sale B | $42 | $5 | $47 |
| Sale C | $49 | $0 | $49 |
If you plan to offer free shipping, $47 is one working item-price estimate. If you charge $5 shipping, a $42 item price produces the same buyer total. Enter these amounts separately in the calculator; don’t count shipping twice.
Work backward to your maximum purchase price →Before buying
Record the evidence, not just the number.
Keep a small research note
Save the date, item identifier, condition, comparable links, total-price range, and your chosen selling estimate. If only one match exists, record that uncertainty and keep the purchase small.
Check demand as well as price
Look at how many comparable items sold in the chosen period. A high sale from months ago doesn’t tell you how quickly your item will move. Product Research’s sell-through metric is available for searches covering sales within 90 days.
